Frequently asked questions

CHOOSING YOUR BLANKET

How do I choose the right weight for my child?

The general guideline is to select a blanket that's approximately 10% of your child's body weight, plus 1-2kg. For example:

  • 20kg child → 2-3kg blanket
  • 30kg child → 3-4kg blanket
  • 40kg child → 4-5kg blanket

However, every child is different. Some children prefer slightly lighter or heavier blankets based on their sensory preferences. If you're unsure, we recommend starting with the lower end of the weight range and consulting with your child's occupational therapist if possible.

Our weight selection guide provides detailed recommendations for each age group and body weight range.

What is the difference between Minky Soft and Bamboo Viscose?

Minky Soft Cover

Our Minky Soft Cover is designed for warmth, coziness, and sensory comfort. It features a plush textured fabric that feels soft, calming, and comforting against the skin — ideal for cooler weather or those who prefer a cozy sleep experience.

Best for:

- Cozy and warm feel
- Sensory comfort
- Cooler seasons
- Plush textured softness

Bamboo Viscose Cover

Our Bamboo Viscose Cover is lightweight, breathable, and cooling to the touch. Made from 100% bamboo viscose fabric, it helps regulate temperature and wick away heat and moisture, making it ideal for warm sleepers or summer use.

Best for:

- Cooling sleep experience
- Hot sleepers
- Warm climates and summer
- Silky smooth feel

Both covers are removable, machine washable, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, and designed to attach securely to your Batuk weighted blanket insert.

What size blanket should I buy?

Weighted blankets should cover your body, not your entire bed. We recommend:

For Kids (3-7 years):

  • 100cm x 150cm for single beds
  • Covers from chest to feet

For Kids (7-12 years):

  • 120cm x 180cm for single/double beds
  • Provides fuller coverage as they grow

For Adults:

  • 150cm x 200cm for double/queen beds
  • 180cm x 220cm for king beds

The blanket should drape over the sides of the body but not hang off the edge of the bed, as this can pull the weight unevenly.

At what age can my child start using a weighted blanket?

We recommend weighted blankets for children aged 3 years and older. Children must:

  • Be able to independently remove the blanket if needed
  • Not have any respiratory conditions that could be affected by weight on the chest
  • Be supervised initially to ensure comfort

For children under 3, or children with specific medical conditions, please consult with your pediatrician or occupational therapist before use.

How do I know if a weighted blanket will help my child?

Weighted blankets provide deep pressure stimulation (DPS), which can benefit children with:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) - helps with self-regulation and sensory processing
  • ADHD - promotes calmness and focus
  • Anxiety - provides a sense of security and comfort
  • Sensory Processing Disorder - regulates sensory input
  • Sleep difficulties - promotes longer, more restful sleep
  • Restless behavior - calming effect on the nervous system

Many occupational therapists recommend weighted blankets as part of a sensory diet. We suggest trying the blanket for at least 6-8 weeks, as some children need time to adjust. If you're uncertain, consult with your child's OT or healthcare provider.

What makes your 8x8cm pockets better than larger pockets

This is our key innovation! Most weighted blankets use 10x10cm or even 15x15cm pockets, but our 8x8cm precision pockets provide:

✓ More even weight distribution - Smaller pockets = more pockets across the blanket = weight stays exactly where it should

✓ No bunching or shifting - Glass beads stay uniformly distributed throughout the night, even if your child moves around

✓ Better therapeutic results - Consistent deep pressure stimulation across the entire body surface

✓ Premium quality - More pockets means more construction detail and higher manufacturing standards

Think of it like pixels on a screen - the more you have, the better the overall picture. Our 8x8cm pockets create a more "high-definition" weight distribution that children (and their nervous systems) can feel the difference with.

Do you have designs suitable for both boys and girls?

We believe every child should have a blanket they love looking at, so we've ensured there's something for every taste and sensory preference.

Can my child use a weighted blanket every night?

Yes! Weighted blankets are safe for nightly use for children aged 3+ who can independently remove the blanket. In fact, consistent use often provides the best results as children's bodies become accustomed to the calming deep pressure.

Some children prefer to use their weighted blanket for:

  • The entire night
  • Just the first few hours while falling asleep
  • During rest time or reading time
  • As needed during stressful periods

There's no "wrong" way to use it - let your child's comfort guide you.

My child is between two weight recommendations?

If your child is between two weight options, we generally recommend going with the lighter weight, especially if:

  • This is their first weighted blanket
  • Your child is sensory-sensitive or anxious about new sensations
  • Your child is on the younger end of the age range

You can always size up later if they want more weight. Starting lighter ensures they feel comfortable and safe with the blanket from day one.

If your child has used weighted blankets before and enjoyed them, or if their occupational therapist has recommended a specific weight, you can confidently choose the heavier option.

SAFETY & CERTIFICATION

Are weighted blankets safe for children?

Yes, when used correctly. Our blankets are:

✓ ARTG Class I Approved - Certified as therapeutic devices by the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods ✓ OEKO-TEX Certified - Tested for over 100 harmful substances and proven safe for sensitive skin ✓ Age-appropriate - Designed specifically for children 3+ years

Safety guidelines:

  • Child must be able to remove the blanket independently
  • Do not use for children under 3 years
  • Supervise initial use
  • Avoid if child has respiratory conditions without medical approval
  • Never cover the child's face with the blanket

When these guidelines are followed, weighted blankets are a safe and effective therapeutic tool.

What does OEKO-TEX certification mean?

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is one of the world's most rigorous and respected certifications for textile safety.

Our blankets are tested for:

  • Over 100 harmful substances including banned chemicals, pesticides, and allergens
  • Heavy metals
  • Formaldehyde
  • Phthalates
  • Colorants that may cause allergies

This certification means every component of our blankets - from the fabric to the thread to the glass beads - has been independently tested and proven safe for direct skin contact, even for children with sensitive skin or allergies.

We renew this certification annually to ensure ongoing compliance and safety.

What does ARTG Class I Approved mean?

ARTG (Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods) Class I approval means our weighted blankets are officially recognized as the rapeutic devices by the Australian Government's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

This approval provides: ✓ Recognition as legitimate therapeutic devices, not just comfort products ✓ Compliance with Australian safety and quality standards ✓ Stronger support for NDIS funding claims ✓ Peace of mind from official regulatory oversight ✓ Potential tax-deductibility as medical equipment (consult your accountant)

This is a significant distinction - many weighted blankets are sold as "bedding" or "comfort items," but our ARTG approval confirms our blankets meet therapeutic device standards.

Are the glass beads safe if the blanket tears?

While our blankets are durably constructed to prevent tearing, we use non-toxic, hypoallergenic glass beads specifically designed for weighted blankets. These beads are:

  • Smooth and rounded (no sharp edges)
  • Too large to be a choking hazard
  • Non-toxic and safe even if touched
  • Contained in multiple layers of fabric

That said, if you notice any damage to your blanket, discontinue use immediately and contact us for a replacement or repair. Never use a damaged weighted blanket.

For extra protection, we recommend using a duvet cover over your weighted blanket, which adds another layer of security.

Can my child use a weighted blanket if they have asthma ?

Please consult with your child's doctor before using a weighted blanket if they have:

  • Asthma
  • Sleep apnea
  • Any respiratory condition
  • Heart conditions
  • Circulatory problems

In most cases, appropriately weighted blankets are safe, but individual medical clearance is essential for children with these conditions.

Do weighted blankets increase the risk of SIDS?

Weighted blankets should never be used for infants or toddlers under 3 years of age. SIDS is a risk for babies under 12 months, and weighted blankets are not designed for or safe for this age group.

Our blankets are specifically designed for children aged 3+ who have the strength and motor skills to independently move or remove the blanket.
